Every neighborhood has schools, but Germantown boasts 34 schools to chose from, in a wide range of sizes, religious affiliations, program offerings in the public or private
categories.  Philadelphia University and LaSalle University, located on the west and eastern borders of Germantown respectively, serve as the community's higher education hubs. Eight schools serve high school level students, nine serve middle school. thirteen serve elementary level, and three serve Pre-K and Kindergarten students only.

History: One of the oldest neighborhoods in Philadelphia, Germantown has witnessed significant changes from its founding in 1683 to the present. Progressive movements have
taken root and flourished as early as the 19th century with educator Bronson Alcott and spanning the 20th and 21st centuries with schools under the care of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, the Philadelphia School District and numerous independent and Charter schools with special emphases. Special schools
abound in subject areas such as science, music, arts, circus arts,  cooking and cosmetology.
