Living in Germantown: All Together
On Wednesday, June 30, 2010, Germantown Community Connection and West Central Germantown Neighbors co-hosted the first of 3 Living in Germantown events at the First Presbyterian Church in Germantown The first event was a community dialogue to imagine a more perfect Germantown and the road we can take to get there. Motivated by President Obama's More Perfect Union speech, and his callto action for Americans to talk to each other about race and class. Living in Germantown is a collaborative effort among individuals and organizations to identify and promote commitment to activities conducive to a more harmonious Germantown.
Facilitators for the event included Susan Guggenheim, Tom Grundy, Barry Cross,Kenyatta James, Marshall Freeman, Nadine Rosechild Sullivan and Betty Turner.
Volunteers, Joanne Sharpless and Marney Hague, baked cookiesand brought cooling sun tea and water. Photos by Pamela Bracey.
Over 70 people attended this event and many shared their experience in Germantown and their vision for Germantown. Households, business, community organizations, representatives of elected officials, and a number of institutions.
One of the facilitators, Nadine Rosechild Sullivan, led us to a place of vision andthen, commitment as individuals. These commitments were shared: things like picking trash; greeting people on the street; shopping locally, socializing locally and just
walking in the neighborhood.
Kenyatta James, another facilitator summed up the event challenging everyone o take a step, any step, no matter how small on this Great Road of Change. Marshall Freeman, Human Relations Commissioner for the City of Philadelphia, (a Germantowner from birth) pledged Commission support.
Living in Germantown: All Together # 2 will be co-hosted by GCC and WCGN and First Presbyterian Church in Germantown on September 22, 2010. Living in Germantown: All Together # 3 was held on December 2, 2010 at First Presbyterian Church
in Germantown. LiG event # 4 is March 3, 2011
