Germantown is a trove of hidden treasures from vibrant green oases amidst the hustle and bustle of busy city streets to clean and green playgrounds for our little ones to enjoy.  No matter what your age or interests, Germantown has a variety of beautiful green spaces so children and families can enjoy a healthy lifestyle and hands on learning about environmental and sustainability issues.  Whether you want to experience working on a local organic farm or enjoy outdoors by walking, running, biking or taking a horseback ride through beautiful woods on historic trails, Germantown has what you are looking for.  Come take your pick of any one of the exciting open spaces or recreation opportunities the Germantown environment has to offer.

Increasingly, Germantown is becoming a center of greening and urban farming.  The Philadelphia Water Department is embarked on a city-wide diversion of stormwater into newly created green spaces such as street trees, rain gardens and encouraging installation of rain barrels to divert rain water from downspouts into yards.  Much of this work in Germantown is being undertaken by the Germantown based Tookay/Tacony Frankford Watershed Partnership (TTF).

Urban farming is growing in Germantown.  Awbury Arboretum has transformed a portion of its space for farming by Weavers' Way Cooperative, Pennsylvania Horticulture Society, Penn State Cooperative Extension, local schools and others.  Several historic sites in Germantown conduct farmers' markets in season and others are being planned.  These markets include produce from the sites and farm stands from neighboring counties sponsored by the Food Trust.  More and more families are planting food gardens on their own properties.

Germantown has Greening Organizations, Youth Environmental Opportunities, Urban Agriculture, Open Space, Neighborhood Groups-Greening, Trail Systems and, Recreation at Awbury, Happy Hollow, Mallory Playground, Morton, Waterview and the Lonnie Young Rececreation Center.
